Sat Siri Khalsa Interview by Charlotte BensonInside This Issue

Sat Siri Khalsa

Charlotte: Thank you for carving out some time to chat with me on behalf of ACVA, especially since you have just returned from India! I hope your astral body has caught up with you by now. Please tell me how you got started in Astrology.

Sat Siri: Ok. I've been interested in Astrology since I was a little kid looking at the Moon. I'd be at my Grandmother's house, at Thanksgiving, saying: "Why don't we make a toast to the Moon?" All the adults thought - this is a strange girl.

Charlotte: That was their first clue about you. (laughter)

Sat Siri: So then, with Vedic Astrology - that was pretty cool. Someone just showed at our house, stayed with us a couple days, and left this book with me. And it was called

"Brihat Jataka." So I started reading through that, and was mightily puzzled! But I knew there was something there. And then later, I read a book by James Braha - "Ancient Hindu Astrology for the Modern Western Astrologer." That book put it at a level I could understand. And then - there I went.

Charlotte: I love that book, too. All Braha's books actually. Well - that's quite a leap for you. You became so immersed in the study that you became a professional consulting Jyotishi.

Sat Siri: Yes. I was always doing charts for everybody, all the time anyway.

Charlotte: You looked at my chart for me, at a conference, years ago - I was amazed at what new features in it, that you could see, from your perspective - you're clearly an expert. What are your favorite Jyotish resources?

Sat Siri: Well, I used to be just voracious, and take in anything and everything and whatever I could. And now it seems to kind have shaken out to being more systematic. So, if   >>> Read More

Light Notes from Editor Christina Collins

As we complete the Pitta Summer season we are creating new features for the ACVA news as we move towards the Fall!

In this issue we give you a new section on yoga, beginning with some yoga postures that are good for summertime or “pitta time,” and in our September issue we will add a section on Ayurveda which will include “The Recipe of the Month,” and articles and interviews with established Ayurvedic and Yoga professionals. If you would like to be a part of this expansion, please send an email to editor@acvaonline.org and let us know.

This month we welcome Ruth Hartung (Shraddhasagar) who presents her Yoga knowledge and some good poses for Summer.

Komilla Sutton’s Webinar on the Fall lineup of 5 planets in debilitation was a great success! Sold out! If you missed it live, you can still get it and be sure to go to Letters to the Editor to read what her audience thinks!

Commonly, I receive questions pertaining to how long a planet is in a sign, or what gemstone or color goes with a certain planet, and even what direction goes with Saturn or another planet? So I made a little quick key for everyone, realizing of course, that there exists an in-depth study with each topic.

Time each planet spends in a sign of the zodiac
Sun - 30 days (1 month)
Moon - 3 days in a sign, 1 day per Nakshatra
Mars - 30 days to many months depends upon whether orbit is close or far from earth.
Mercury – 30 days plus depending upon retrograde motion
Jupiter - 1 year
Venus – 60 days
Saturn – 2 1/2 years
Rahu - 18 months
Ketu - 18 months

Planetary Directions
KetuOverhead or straight above
Gemstones associated with each Planet
MarsRed Coral
RahuHessonite Garnet
JupiterYellow Sapphire
SaturnBlue Sapphire
KetuCat's Eye Chrysoberyl

Traditionally we wear the gemstone of our Moon, rising sign, and 5th or 9th house rulers. Two schools of thought exist. Wear the stone of the benefic planets in your chart to fortify them and to make them stronger in order to ward off negativity. Or, wear the stone of the malefics in your chart to make them more content so that they will cause less harm. (feed the hungry tiger so it won’t eat you). I personally subscribe to both systems of thinking. However, make sure you really know what you are doing, before you recommend a gemstone or a mantra for a planet that is malefic in a chart. Also, make sure to obtain “Jyotish quality,” gemstones - here quality is more important than size, though two carets or more is common thought. A one caret perfect stone is better though, than a two caret stone with a flaw or spot.

Some people wear the color of a planet on its day

MarsTuesdayCoral or Reddish Orange
RahuSaturday (acts like Saturn)Rust
SaturnSaturdayBlue or Purple, Black with caution
KetuTuesday (acts like Mars)Coral or Lime Green or Turquoise
VenusFridayWhite (some say Pink)

You can also wear the colors of a planet’s friend on any given day.

If your chart has both sets of friends as benefics (rulers of the “good,” houses) then you can wear a Navaratna Nava = Nine and Ratna = Gems.
Friends – Jupiter, Sun, Mars, Ketu, and Moon (who has no enemies).
Friends – Saturn, Mercury, Venus, Rahu

White, as you probably already know, is worn by Jyotish Practioners when working with clients, or studying and Black is never worn when focused on Jyotish.

Look forward to our September issue with an in-depth interview with Vedic Astrologer
William R. Levacy our ACVA Online President!

August 1st We begin the month with Mars in Taurus, Venus in Gemini, Ketu in Cancer, Sun midpoint in Cancer, Mercury in Leo (on July 31st), Saturn in Leo, Moon in Scorpio, Jyestha, Rahu in Capricorn and Jupiter having retrograded back into Capricorn, its sign of debilitation. Note, that while debilitated it is Neecha Banga Raja Yoga. (cancellation of debilitation) It will be cancelled until it goes direct on October 13th, 2009 - Note, in Vedic Astrology, we do not traditionally "read," the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. I have added them here for those who use them. For those who have asked - Uk is Upa Ketu  Read Complete August Tips

Letters to the Editor by Christina Collins

Komilla Sutton’s webinar on the October line up of multiple debilitated planets in transit at the same time was a sell-out success and used all of our webinar seats! If you were unable to get on the call, you can still download the webinar.

Thank you, Komilla for your ACVA Webinar presentation today. More than a "classroom," your session today shared information which reaches me at a deep level and feels like a peaceful meditation session has just lifted me.

From beginning to end, your entire presentation was flowing and meaningful, and I especially appreciate your beginning and ending mantras and their explanations, as well as remedy suggestions.

You are very special. Thank you, again,

Jeane S.

Thank you for the presentation...it was really wonderful.

For one, please do send me the presentation.

Secondly, my phone went dead during the question period and I tried to text my question. I will repeat it now. During the webinar, earlier on you equated debilitated planets with planets in the signs of enemies. Later in the webinar, you related the debilitated planets to the 4th state and did not discuss enemy planets. Does the information about debilitated planets apply identically to enemy planets.

Kindly clarify,

Thank you for an incredible class, beautifully presented and spiritually moving.

Please send me a copy of this presentation.

With great respect,

Angela P.

August Yoga Tip

In beginning a home practice, commitment to consistency becomes our greatest ally in experiencing the many physical and spiritual benefits of yoga. Make it a ritual time of day, dedicate a place for yogic practices and create an altar honoring the elements and/or whatever your personal deity is. Set aside a special yoga blanket or mat and meditation cushion as it is well known that the energy builds in places and objects when used regularly for practices.
